Challenges in sludge processing

The challenge for wastewater treatment plants with sludge lies in the disposal of the residual stream. By dewatering, you reduce the volume and weight, resulting in cost savings on disposal. Sludge from the wastewater treatment plant can also be used as fuel or as a raw material in various processes. To make the sludge suitable for these purposes, the moisture content must be significantly reduced.

Energy efficiency

The Dorset Green Machines dryer is highly suitable for drying sludge because it can dry at low temperatures and is energy efficient. The drying process is fully automatic, operating 24/7 without direct supervision. The sludge will be dried to a dry matter content of 85-90%, resulting in volume reduction, weight reduction, easy storage, and good properties for transport, export, or further processing.

Low operating costs

After separation, the sludge is stored in a bunker or toploader bulk storage system. From here, it is distributed over the drying racks by a dosing head or mixer. The plates can carry a high layer of product on top and, because of the wide holes, the belt does not need cleaning.

Compared to other types of dryers, the drying racks have lower air resistance, resulting in lower energy consumption. The dryer can operate with available residual heat or an external heat source, making it a versatile solution for various settings.

Efficient drying and storage

The dryer is available in coated steel or with stainless steel components for high resistance to aggressive substances. Hygienization is optional and is achieved by heating the material for a certain period. This can be done as a standalone process or integrated with the dryer.

The end product is a granulate. Storage of this dried product can be managed via bulk storage systems such as a toploader or bunker, tailored to the customer’s needs and situation. Air treatment can be added through air cleaners or biofilters.
