Herbert Cordes runs an agricultural enterprise where he deals with various types of biomass. Since 2015, he has been using a dryer from Dorset Green Machines. Herbert, along with Klaus Wurthmann, is active in the biogas sector, producing nearly the entire gas supply for the Sottrum community.
Herbert shares his story about the dryer and chemical air scrubber. The decision to reduce the amount of fermentation residue, utilize heat, benefit from the CHP bonus, save storage space, and produce dried nutrients led them to Dorset Green Machines. Uwe Ringen, another satisfied Dorset customer, already had an installation, and after researching various factories, Herbert chose Dorset for their continuous process and constant heat recovery. Positive stories about Dorset Green Machines in trade journals reinforced his conviction.
“The prospect of producing my own ammonium sulfate, which would replace fossil fuels currently used in fertilizer production, was a key element in my decision-making.”
Herbert Cordes
Continuous heat recovery, the production of mineral fertilizers with at least 5% ammonium-N, and the focus on sustainability, especially with the CHP bonus until 2028, made the choice for Dorset even more attractive. The realization that approximately 1 liter of crude oil is used for every kilogram of nitrogen emphasized the importance of sustainable alternatives.
The installation process was generally smooth, and any issues were quickly resolved. Commissioning took several months, during which problems with the air scrubber were solved by combining the two phases of chemicals and dust. Daily checks and adjustments are necessary, but the effort is limited to 20-30 minutes per day. Malfunctions occupy about 10 hours per month, but the benefits are worth it. The machine has contributed significantly to income through the sale of ammonium sulfate and dried material, with certification for organic farming, such as Weganico.
“Without the dryers, the entire business model of biogas storage would not have been feasible.”
Herbert Cordes
Drying the digestate was an essential part of the permit, making large containers for manure disposal unnecessary. Without the dryers, the entire business model of biogas storage would not have been feasible. The CHP bonus is crucial, and nutrient removal is necessary for the company’s survival.
Three years after installation, the system met expectations. The sale of fertilizers, the CHP bonus, and the savings on storage space have taken the business to a new level. Despite downtime during the first major maintenance, the service remained efficient. Monthly spare parts orders ensure quick action in case of problems. Overall, the installation is considered a win-win, both ecologically and commercially.
